New Orleans goes bananas over Chiquita Brands’ return
May 20, 2014
New Orleans welcomes back Chiquita Brands International Inc. after 40 years. The move will create 270-350 jobs.
The banana supplier has spent the last four decades in Gulfport, Mississippi, after leaving New Orleans, its home of 70 years.
Once back in New Orleans, the amount of cargo handled will rise by 15 percent. Shipping will begin in 2015 with newer and larger ships to specifically serve the markets in the Gulf of Florida.
Thirty thousand to 39,000 20-foot units of bananas, along with other fruit, will now be shipped to New Orleans.
However, Gulfport won’t be left empty handed. The port will soon have a new tenant that will bring in even more jobs than those lost by Chiquita’s move.
